Plant Description
Pedilanthus is a genus of plants in the family Euphorbiaceae, native to the Americas. The most commonly grown species is Pedilanthus tithymaloides, also known as devil's backbone or redbird cactus. Despite its common names, it is not a true cactus but rather a succulent. Devil's backbone is a popular houseplant due to its attractive appearance and ease of care. It has thick, fleshy stems that grow upright and branch out, forming a dense, bushy plant. The leaves are small and inconspicuous, and the real show-stopper is the bright red, zigzagging bracts that emerge from the stems. In summer, the plant may produce small, inconspicuous flowers.
Pedilanthus plants are relatively low-maintenance and can thrive in a variety of conditions. They prefer bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sun. They also prefer well-draining soil and should be watered sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Devil's backbone is also drought-tolerant and can handle some neglect, making it an excellent choice for beginner gardeners.
